Hypermagic Mountain

I've been a fan of this band for years but I don't think I've ever listened to an album front to back. Hypermagic mountain is a killer record with a lot of chaos initially but it's pretty cathartic at the same time.

The band, hailing from Providence Rhode Island, consists of a drummer and a bassist, both named Brian, both using lots of pedals and crazy effects. The drummer also happens to be a singer, and his vocals are screamed through the mic of a wired telephone that has been cut off and sewn into his mask.

My friend Lewis at one point described this band as "evil math rock". This is true to some degree. They also share a trait with Primus, where a very small group of people can make an insane amount of noise. I believe officially this band is classified as noise rock, but who's to say.

The album Hypermagic mountain is definitely in their top three albums I think. If I had to pick one song for someone to listen to, it would be Dead Cowboy. Supposedly people really liked my last review where I said one phrase for every song on The Mollusk by Ween, so I shall do the same for this record:

1. 2 Morro Morro Land: a good start, chaotic and seamlessly leads into the second song.

2. Captain Caveman: Heat Wave induced psychosis basically. Droning bass guitar that feels very unnerving throughout the track

3. I don't know how I feel about this one, a little boring but I liked some of the thrashy parts.

4. Riff Wraiths: Playing this next time I run with scissors.

5. Mega Ghost: Wailing like a banshee at the moors or something.

6. Magic Mountain: Easily one of the best tracks on this album, it sounds like you're starting a car up but in slow motion. The end portion makes me feel like I'm leaving my body.

7. A critique of big oil and the Bush administration. As most artsy hipster bands are, these guys are pretty liberal I guess. The ending is very cathartic and thrashy.

8. Bizzaro Zarro Land: guitar hero ultimate difficulty

9. Getting teleported into their own silly little world and having to fight ghouls for like 9 minutes and 38 seconds.

10. Bizzaro Bike: Really nice fuzzy tone, kind of reminds me of... Um... If Sepultura was playing on AM radio.

11. Infinity Farm: Squeaky and grimy. Whimpering voices. A weirdy but a goodie

12. No Rest for the Obsessed: Apocalyptic public service announcement.

Ultimately I would give this album 7 out of 10 stars because I thoroughly enjoyed it but I wouldn't consider it a classic. These guys rock, check them out if you hate your eardrums.
